Utah closes to oversize movement on the twenty-fourth of July for Pioneer Day, a state holiday that appears on no federal calendar and catches out carriers planning a summer run from one. It sits alongside the usual major holidays and holiday weekends.
The rest of the year, daylight movement runs seven days a week, and a load within ten feet of width, legal height, ninety-two feet overall and ten feet of overhang may run around the clock with the required lighting. The permit is valid five days and can be picked up at a port of entry on the state line — or at an interior port with advance permission, which is a useful fallback.
The curfew is a Wasatch Front rule rather than a city rule: no movement between six and nine in the morning or half past three and six in the evening on weekdays, for loads over ten feet wide or over a hundred and five feet overall, through Box Elder south of exit 357, Weber, Davis, Salt Lake and northern Utah counties. That covers essentially the whole populated corridor. Against that, the routine allowances are among the largest in the west — seventeen feet of width, seventeen feet six of height and a hundred and forty-eight thousand five hundred pounds on seven axles. A bulldozer blade over sixteen feet must come off.

When the load may move
Permit validity. Permits are valid for five days. They may be obtained at a port of entry on the state line, or at an interior port with advance permission.
Operating time. Daylight — half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset — including Saturday and Sunday. A load within 10′ wide, legal height, 92′ overall and 10′ of overhang may travel around the clock with the required lighting.
Restricted travel. Loads over 10′ wide or over 105′ overall may not move 6–9 AM or 3:30–6 PM, Monday to Friday, through Box Elder county south of I-15 exit 357, Weber, Davis and Salt Lake counties, and Utah county north of SR75 at I-15 exit 261 and SR68 milepost 16. No travel on major holidays, holiday weekends, or on 24 July for Pioneer Day.
