South Dakota oversize permit requirements
South Dakota sets no overall length limit at all. The semitrailer is held to fifty-three feet, but the combination as a whole has no published ceiling — a distinction almost no other state draws, and one that makes the state unusually easy for long loads. Poles, pipes and beams are exempt from length and overhang permits on top of that, which is precisely the exemption North Dakota next door refuses.
Movement runs sunrise to sunset including Saturday and Sunday. Overweight-only loads travel around the clock, and a load within ten feet of width, fourteen feet six of height and a hundred and ten feet of length may run continuously on the Interstate. The permit runs three days and must be obtained before entering the state.
The one geographic rule to know is the Black Hills. Anything over ten feet wide needs an escort there — a threshold far below the sixteen feet that triggers one on the Interstate elsewhere in the state, and a reflection of what the roads through the Hills are actually like. Routine axle allowances are ordinary for the region: twenty-four thousand pounds on a single, forty-six on a tandem, sixty on a tridem and sixty-eight on a quad, with dimensions decided by route. Spring weight restrictions can arrive any time after the fifteenth of February.
