Alaska is the only state that will extend a permit because of the distance or the weather. The base validity is three days, which would be impossible on routes where a single leg can run several hundred miles through country with no alternative road — so the state builds the extension into the rule rather than making carriers reapply. It is a small provision that tells you most of what you need to know about hauling here.
The spring thaw is the other thing that governs a schedule. From roughly March to June, allowable weights are cut to eighty-five, seventy-five or fifty per cent of the normal limits depending on conditions. A load that is legal in February can be half illegal in April, and the reduction is far deeper than the ten to thirty-five per cent seen in the lower forty-eight.
Movement is daylight, Monday to Saturday, with no Sunday travel — except that a load within ten feet of width, sixteen feet of height and eighty-five feet of length may travel at any time. Legal axle allowances are notably high: thirty-eight thousand pounds on a tandem and fifty thousand on a quad. Routine permits run to a hundred and fifty thousand pounds gross with thirty thousand on a single axle, fifty-six thousand on a tandem, seventy thousand on a tridem and eighty thousand on a quad.
